An interdisciplinary group of researchers, professionals, and students dedicated to the study and development of the bio-energy industry in Connecticut.
Consortium efforts are divided by:
Research: The biodiesel industry is handicapped by a traditionally inefficient production method and expensive feed stocks. More research and outreach in regards to the environmental, economic, political, and health benefits of biodiesel production and use needs to be conducted. Through an interdisciplinary effort from the Departments of Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Economics, Natural Resources Management and Engineering, Plant Science, and others, these issues will be addressed.
Education: The Department of Chemical Engineering has proposed the integration of biodiesel production into the curriculum. Students in their senior year will be exposed to fuel production, process control, and quality assurance (through analytical methods to test for the ASTM standards). Most importantly, such curriculum integration gives students experience in a sustainable and innovative field.
